Resources / AI visibility explained

Why an assistant names one business and not another.

A customer asks an assistant for a garage door repair company in their town. Three businesses get named. Here is what decides which three.

An assistant is reading, not deciding

No assistant has an opinion about your business. It builds an answer out of what it can find and what it can trust, then writes that answer in a confident voice. The confident voice is what makes it feel like a verdict. It is not one.

Which means the question is never "how do I convince the AI". It is "what is the AI reading, and does it say the right thing about me".

The four things it reads

  • Your own website. Does it state plainly what you do, where you do it, and how to reach you? Most local sites answer the first question and fumble the second.
  • Your business listing. Categories, service areas, hours, phone. If the listing and the website disagree, neither one gets trusted.
  • Your reviews. Not the star count so much as what the reviews describe. Reviews that mention the specific service are the ones that make you findable for it.
  • Other pages that mention you. Directories, local news, supplier pages. Corroboration from somewhere that is not you.

Why the four assistants disagree

They read different sources, refreshed at different times, with different rules about what counts as reliable. One may lean on a live web search, another on what it learned months ago. So a business can be named confidently by one assistant and be invisible to the other three on the same day.

That is not a bug to be fixed, it is a reason to measure all four. A single check against one assistant tells you almost nothing.

What actually moves it

  • Saying the thing plainly on your own site, in the words a customer would use.
  • Making the listing and the site agree, down to the phone number format.
  • Having the service and the area on the same page, not in separate silos.
  • Answering reviews, because an answered review is a page that describes your work in specifics.
  • Being mentioned somewhere credible that is not your own website.

You will notice that is the same list that earns a local ranking. That is the real headline: AI visibility is not a separate discipline bolted on to SEO. It is the same groundwork, measured by a new judge.

What does not move it

  • Paying anybody. There is no ad slot inside an assistant answer about local businesses, and no submission form.
  • Keyword stuffing. An assistant summarising a stuffed page will summarise it as a stuffed page.
  • Publishing thirty near-identical town pages. It reads as what it is.

How to read a score of 0 percent

It usually does not mean you were rejected. It means the assistant had nothing solid to build you into the answer with. That is the most fixable state to be in, and it is where the fix list starts.
